I agree with that emphatically. I don't think Marvel would've survived the 60s had they been following this annually...hell, make it quarterly, event model. That said, aside from crossovers that are basically glorified guest appearances (or just 1 or 2 issues between 2 series), the only event crossover I ever really enjoyed was Infinity Gauntlet, but I was 7 going on 8 when that came out and it blew my mind.
