I'm rather old school, and the Brubaker/Phillips Sleeper (which I really liked) was a stretch for me.

The local library has a pile of Scalped trades. I borrowed the first three to read, made it through two, quit reading and took a long, long shower using a lot of soap.

Judging by how long the series lasted and the accolades it got, Scalped must be good stuff, but it's just too grim, gritty, slimy, disgusting, etc., etc. for my (apparently prissy) tastes.
Well, if you made it through V2 'Casino Boogie' and you weren't enticed to go on, then you gave it a fair shot.  I, and several others on this board, found V1 to be too ... 'hard-edged' (i.e. grim, gritty, slimy, disgusting).  However, I think V2 is significantly more story and character-based, so the shocking elements didn't overwhelm my enjoyment.  The entire work is in the form of an epic tragedy, and Aaron does a well-above-average job of making unlikeable characters likeable.
