Marvel Mystery Comics
#3, January 1940 [published 17 Nov 39]
“The Human Torch” – Pop culture reference: Mr. Carson has a television on a train. There really is a
“trinitrotoluol”
explosive, or rather it is another name for
trinitrotoluene
(T.N.T.). I like the story, but not the artwork. Was this Timely’s first interstellar menace?
Carl!
Super-heated sand does not become mud! This tale ends with flame that follows spoken orders!!?!
“The Angel” – an unexplained cold wind seems to be the Angel’s trademark. I’m not sure exactly what happens at the end. Where did the worshipers go? Looking back at the cover, I can say that it sort of relates to the story, but Alex Schomburg’s illustration is a lot more dramatic than the story itself.
“Prince Namor, the Sub-Mariner” – Policewoman Betty Dean is recruited to entrap the Sub-Mariner. Betty must have a gun and ammunition that are not damaged by getting wet.
Namor is such a dog!
There are a lot of things in this story that the Sub-Mariner shouldn’t know, living the sheltered existence that he has, but he knows them anyway. Is this the end of Namor being a rebellious iconoclast?
I hope not.
“The Masked Raider” – a straight-talking Sheriff with a shady past who now feels compromised. It’s been done before, but at least it has some depth. Since when is the Masked Raider wanted? The art has gone downhill on this strip, but I have to compliment the pacing.
“American Ace” – This art has gone downhill too.
*SIGH!*
"The American Ace" saga was continued in
The Arrow
#2, published by Centaur.
“Siegfried Suicide” (text story) – Okay, so tell me this wasn’t a piece of war propaganda!
You know that it was.
Adventures of Ka-Zar the Great:
“Third Episode” – This is a very good episode. I generally like it. I’m presuming these are still being adapted from the first
Ka-Zar
pulp. The humans are drawn a little bit rough but the animals are nice.
Anarchy and Chaos are the natural state of the human race. Civilization is unnatural. It is a whim of circumstance. And Chaos must always ultimately triumph.
