The Mighty Thor #129, June 1966 [published 5 Apr 66]

“The Verdict of Zeus” - Script: Stan Lee; Art: Jack Kirby; Inking: Vince Colletta; Lettering: Art Simek

The interlude with the cabbie is amusing, and starts this tale off at a slower pace.

Page 4: Nice full page spread of Olympus. In the caption for this page Stan seems to admit that music cannot be represented in comics in any form (I agree). It’s too bad later writers didn’t take this advice to heart.

Page 6: Hercules confronts a titan who apparently escaped being eaten by Hercules’ grand-sire.

Page 7:
for the second time we have a succession of sound-effects-only panels.

It’s too bad the circumstances of this story do not permanently teach Hercules some Humility.

Tana Nile appears in a prologue to the next Thor epic.

A new bit of Asgardian culture comes our way via “The Day of the Three Worlds” and “The Book of Enchanters”. Oh well, any plot device will do.

As Hercules seeks a champion I remember a younger day, a penniless condition, a car that wouldn’t start, waiting for the bus in the freezing cold. As my glasses iced over, and my toes and fingers and ears froze and I knew I couldn’t go on . . . anyway, this is what Hercules plight made me think of.

Tales of Asgard: “The Hordes of Harokin” - Script: Stan Lee; Art: Jack Kirby; Inking: Vince Colletta; Lettering: Art Simek

We transition from one long continued story into the next (again, midway through the story) as we begin the tale of Harokin and the Warlock’s eye. We will have to look elsewhere for a place for the 2nd Thor annual to fit into the continuity of these tales.

Anarchy and Chaos are the natural state of the human race. Civilization is unnatural. It is a whim of circumstance. And Chaos must always ultimately triumph.
