Notwithstanding your example, the caveats are that in order to notice the spines, the hypothetical customer has to either be in a comic shop or browsing the comics section of their bookstore in the first place. And in those cases, the odds are high - to my thinking - that whether the horse is a little larger or the M a bit redder (or whatever the minor change was) will have little-to-no difference on whether the TITLE appeals.

Even the weird barely-legible-without-the-text-below-it DC logo surely won't stand out more or less to a potential buyer than the big 'Batman' (et al.) logo...
