As a parent of kids who love comics (mostly my Archives) I was looking forward to the New DCU as a great stepping on point for my kids to each get a title they were interested in and they could then share them back and forth. They are almost 10 (girl) and almost 7 (boy). We were promised that the writers wouldn't write for the trade anymore and that if the story only needed 1 or 2 issues it would only be 1 or 2 issues. If it needed 16 it would be 16. I thought, "What great fun. They can start collecting from issue #1 and have the same fun I did."

I bought Justice League when it came out and we read it together. I did read it first just to check it out, but thought it was OK. I should reveal that my kids--daughter especially--are sensitive. Heck, my girl was terrified of "The Doomsday Machine" on Star Trek. When Detective Comics came out and Joker gleefully sliced off his face (not sure if he really did it as I didn't read the full story) I decided that they weren't for them. We continue to read Justice League, but I'm getting fatigued by how drawn out it is. My kids complain because it only takes a few minutes to read each issue, while the Archives take 15 or so. They think it's a waste of money and aren't into it (for themselves) anymore. They still like to read Justice League together with me.

Is the new 52 a failure for me? Yes and no. Financially I used to buy 1 DC title: Legion of Super-Heroes. Now I buy that and Legion: Lost and JL. I'm drawn into the stories, but the Legion didn't get the reboot most everyone else got. I really liked the early Justice League and thought it was going to stay there. Now that it's moved to the present I don't care so much anymore. If I find a jumping off point I'll probably bail, unless the kids are still into it. LSH bores me of late, but I do like LL (surprisingly). Of course, it features most of my favorites, while the main title does not. That's probably why LSH bores me, because I think most of the characters are boring and stiff.
