I agree about the pre-New 52 universe!  However, I think instead of using the New 52 to change the tone of the content, they primarily kept the tone mostly the same (not a surprise given the creative teams).  Yes, it generated some new sales, but they appear to be mostly short-term.  It's not apparent that a lot of new readers were created -- just the same readers buying more books while they're still nice and shiny.  That said, I'm not sure changing the tone would lead to dramatically new readers either given the insular nature of the direct market.  Perhaps in digital distribution, but the cost and format still seem to be an issue to me.
