I had the complete run as a child and still do, re-read them recently (which are all the ones in the Omnibus). What do you guys think about Claremont having Dejah Thors as the love slave to Chan Tomar, to save John Carter? Does anyone know if the ERB estate was upset at this, or was Marvel, or did he get good feedback? It was a thought-provoking scenario. Just wondering if he caught any flak....

Nah. There's all kinds of that type of innuendo in the books...fair maidens and princess kidnapped and held in the clutches of evil depraved Jeddaks and so forth. There's nothing overt or graphic (espscially compared to today...see A Song of Ice and Fire books by Martin) but it's implied...exactly the way Claremont did it.

Wolfman's writing I found too forced and wordy for a comic. And I thought he made Carter far too angry all the time (almost homicidal) and more obsessed  with Dejah than in love. Reading Carter under Wolfman you get almost a kind of creepy possessive stalker vibe from John.  I don't recall Carter being quite that...intense in the books. Passionate,  yes.

Re-reading the series in the Omnibus, it was a brief of fresh air when Claremont came on. The stories flowed so much faster and were far more enjoyable.
