It's been a week or two now for some people with the John Carter Omnibus. I'm wondering how people feel about the stories, particularly the Master Assassin serial?

The Amazon reviews for the omnibus have all praised the package (and it does sound nice) but was anyone else disappointed by the post-Wolfman/Kane stories?

Quite the opposite! Chris Claremont is a far superior writer to Marv Wolfman, despite the latter's obvious love for Burroughs and sincere effort to mimic ERB's writing style.   To be honest, I've never really cared much for anything Wolfman's written outside of TOMB OF DRACULA. George Perez carried most of the weight on NEW TEEN TITANS. JOHN CARTER really improves once Wolfman is gone.
Sentry - thanks for the feedback. Well, i'll have to go back and re-read that serial because the first six episodes seemed so pointless.  The art didn't help elevate it either.

Mind you, I'm not putting down your appreciation.  We don't all have to like or dis-like the same material.  I'll just say it seemed like one of Claremont's weaker stories. He does try to do something interesting things with Dejah Thoris but I suspect editorial had him retreat from the potentially scandalous treatment of Thoris.  Still, he does a great job of portraying Dejah's sacrifice of her dignity as a noble act, not a lecherous or weak one.

Yes, the art is better on the Wolfman run, but Ernie Colon and Mike Vosburg do serviceable work. But oh how  looking at the covers John Byrne and George Perez did for the series makes we wish we got a couple of issues or at least an annual by one of those two!
I agree about the Byrne and Perez suggestion. Frank Miller's fill in looked excellent.  Bob Layton would have given us a really fine story too.  I've seen better from Colan and Vosburg.  I don't think the later had a great inker on the series.  Colon at least has some interesting layout and design ideas.

Anyway, thanks again Sentry.

You're welcome!  But I think Kosh gets the credit for all those comments!  WinkLaugh
