Personally, I didn't think Schism was that good.

However, it's lead to some absolutely stellar stories, particularly 'Wolverine And The X-Men'.

But whatever you do, do NOT buy 'Prelude To Schism'.

It's not needed at all, and it's rather poorly done, with a VERY tenuous claim of being a real prelude to the event at all.

I would counter that I thought Schism was FANTASTIC and didn't really require much deep X-history knowledge beyond Wolverine and Cyclops both used to be in love with Jean Grey. Everything else will probably be outlined in a few sentences at the beginning of the trade/HC. But heed Archangel's warning to avoid "Prelude to Schism", it may be the most superfluous X-book ever (and that's saying A LOT!). I do agree with Archangel that everything that has spun out of Schism has been top notch. If you were only going to try one, then try Wolverine and the X-Men, it's brilliantly written, both artists are blowing my mind every issue, which having totally different styles and thus far it relies very little on any X-history prior to Schism. Plus it features lots of new characters who have no history to worry about and are incredibly entertaining (where has Broo been all my life?)!
