A few posts back kosh62, wondered about John Wayne having ever played a real villian in a film.  And I feel he came most close to playing heroes that were a mix of both in many of his greatest films.  Several posts back, I said I felt his greatness as an actor came from his ability to never let you "see" him acting.  Couple that with with the fact that as years went by the public lost the ability to seperate Wayne's real life with his reel life and it is easy to understand why some thought of him as a one note actor.  Granted he made much B- film fodder along the way.  But most of his work from the late forties till the end of his life was filled with very deep roles.  Just a few short examples for chracters as deep and brooding as any ever put to film would include his roles in:  Sands of Iwo Jima (1950), The Quiet Man (1952), Red River (1948), The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962), The Cowboys (1972) and The Shootist (1976).  That list is for deep (often) dark  roles here are a few for just how fine the film with John Wayne in it: Stagecoach (1939), The High & The Mighty (1954), Rio Bravo (1959), North To Alsaka (1960), The Comancheros ( 1961), McLintock (1963), True Grit (1969) and Big Jake (1971).  To be fair here are a few stinkers: Jet Pilot (1957), The Barbarian & The Geisha (1958), and The Conqueror ( 1956) come quickly to mind but I know there are others.  And let's close with his short career as Singing Sandy - one of the first singing cowboys.
