With that out of the way, I can say John Wayne was a excellent film actor who was also well versed in how to make movies, and for me, Clint Eastwood is an excellent film director who is also at home in front of the camera. While both made westerns Eastwood is as well know for his other roles as for the classic western. Wayne, has made other films, from comedy to war but, he is best known as a western actor. For Wayne his best western roles have showcased his great acting talents in films that presented deep often disturbing characters. Think back on Red River, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence, She Wore A Yellow Ribbon, The Shootist, The Cowboys and greatest of all, The Searchers. He did it so well, his ability was often taken for granted. Mr. Eastwood make a dark brooding type of western too with grand results, Pale Rider, The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly, and perhaps best of the lot The Unforgiven. So for me the edge by sheer volume of great work, goes to John Wayne as the actor of the two men. But for direction I would vote for Clint Eastwood.
