My advice:

1. Switch to trades if possible. If not, then go floppies only. But don't buy the floppies of a given title and then buy the trades of that same title afterwards, as that would mean you're buying the same stories twice.

2. Follow writers rather than characters.

3. Never settle for anything less than greatness. If a book is only okay, dump it. If a book has great writing and lousy art, or vice-versa, dump it. Make sure your collection represents the cream of the crop in your opinion.

I did all these things years ago and I never looked back. Switched to trades only. Stopped following titles or characters just because I had been reading them forever. And I let go of anything that didn't completely rock. I trimmed the fat and saved a lot of money. The problem with comics is that the format and the price point don't encourage casual reading. I'd take a chance on a paperback novel from an unknown author if it got good reviews and the subject matter interested me. For eight bucks I get a six hour reading experience. Meanwhile a comic costs three or four bucks and gives me a ten minute reading experience. Not worth the risk if it's lousy.
