I saw this on BR a night ago and it pretty mush sucked.
I'd like to be a little more articulate about its failings but why waste the time?
Chief among the film's problems is that it spends too much but but enough- this is most evident during the Oa sequences which last... 10 minutes. And look terrible. THOR the movie suffers from the same problem: a mythic realm reduced to a CGI painting which the filmmakers never bothered to work around.
Of course, it doesn't help a film that starts off with a title such as... "The Lost Sector of..." Well, clearly we're looking at it and clearly there are creatures on it. So it's not really "lost," is it? Things get worse from there.
Then there's the matter of Hal Jordan. I really don't like that DC is trying to retroactively "Marvelize" the origins of many of their best characters. Yes, Hal lost his father and that's tragic... but it happens. And there are plenty of men who lose their fathers that don't become huge f--- ups in life, which the movie thinks Hal Jordan is but he isn't. It's a very confused movie. Because we're supposed to buy the idea that Hal doesn't measure up and is in great pain... but lives in a nice apartment, drives a vintage automobile, sees more a-- than a toilet seat and flies multi-million dollar aircraft during the day. But he's in pain! With a great life! You have to accept this in order to enjoy the movie. I didn't and judging by the overall responses, I was not alone.
DC has been trying in install "tragic" events that dictate all the choices for their characters. Barry Allen can't just be a guy that wants to do good because he has an incredible power, he now uses his power because he's HAUNTED by the death of his mother. Hal Jordan can't just be a guy that believes he has a sworn duty entrusted to him and acts accordingly he has to do so because he's got daddy issues (he doesn't, by the way, if only the producers had realized this). But it doesn't work. The pre-selling studios execs want is the images and prejudices of the stories we knew- and they don't look like some irresponsible idiot who got lucky with a power ring.
