My main thing is that I like new heroes and new locations.  Plus I like the political/thriller story telling that Africa could open up.  This book could be a modern day version of Grell's Green Arrow series.

Off the top of my head:

Terrorism
Oil
Chinese political influence
Religious Conflict
Glue sniffing AIDS orphans
Gun running
Uganda's gay "death penalty"
Exploited football aspirants
Sex slaves and modern day slavery in general
Corruption
Famine

and on and on

Hmm...  You may have convinced me to give Bat-Wing a digital look.

I bought Action, Detective, Green Arrow & J.L.I.

Detective was a let down:  Daniels art has never been my favorite, and the amount of splash panels was even more than Lee's Justice League.  Was it gruesome?  Yes.  Was it exciting?  No.  Was it pretty?  No.  Am I sticking around?  Yes, grudgingly.

Green Arrow sure was pretty by Dan Jurgens and George Perez.  The format seems like a little mercenary/Smallville Green Arrow, and thats an ok mix.  Not the best Green arrow i've ever read, but an interesting take on the Super-Hero in general.  I'm in for # 2.

Justice League International passes the pretty test with Aaron LoPresti.  I agree with other posters that the story is a little flat, but am intrigued by some of the choices (Chinese Iron General, Vixen, Ice, Fire, Booster) and left disappointed with with others (Fire, Gardner, Batman, Rocket Red, Godiva).  I'm in for issue 2.

Action Comics # 1 is the hit for me that others say it was for them.  Having recently read Golden Age Superman, I am delighted how similar it is to the originals without losing modern sensibilities and sounding/looking old fashioned.  The 'Faster, more powerful, and leaping' homages were spot on in telling new AND old readers who this kid is, as was the 'zee-zee-zee' sound effect of Jimmy's phone.  Also interesting was the appearance of Sgt. Casey from the Metroplois police force, and the flavor of Metroplis provided by a young Clark Kent and his land lady.  Much more...human.  And truly a sense of danger for the hero.  Hope this Action Comics stays in this area of Clark's development for awhile.  As long they do, I'm with them.  It pases the pretty test with Rags Morales.  The only weakness I see is the potential storyline for General lane & Luthor to pursue our hero a'la the Incredible Hulk.  No interest in that at all.
