You have my sympathies as I've struggled with this one. I fundamentally collect pre 1986 stuff from all of the main companies. I have two main criteria. First it must be in hardback if at all possible. I buy trades as cheap reading sometimes but don't keep them unless they are the only available version of classic must have material. Good example here is the Marshall Rogers Batman. Two tpbs but I shall be upgrading immediately to the h/c when it comes out. In the case of the Adams GL/GA, I haven't found the slip cased edition at a reasonable price so have the tpbs but only until I can find a hardback.
My second criteria is colour only unless originally published in b&w. So b&w tpb's like showcase and essentials are the bottom of the heap for me. I don't like them and don't particularly enjoy reading them. I do have all of the DC mystery ones as that material may never be reprinted any other way and I love horror anthologies. They are ok but I still prefer colour. When something is in b&w when it was in colour, feels to me like I'm watching tv on a broken tv set!
DC and Warren don't present many quandaries with h/c format as I've collected the DC archive editions and am now only missing 13 from my set. The DC omnibus editions have in one case tempted me as I don't have the first two NTT archives but I have decided to hold out for those and not buy into another format. I will buy DC omni's if the material isn't available as an archive.
Marvel was secondary to DC and my financial efforts were heavily directed towards DC for a long time. I did however buy 'important' h/c masterworks and other masterworks that were cheap. This left me with a collection of all styles of cover and my OCD tendancies have finally demanded I restrict myself to the silver and black one. I have therefore ditched 16 h/c masterworks (including the first 14 released). I have chosen to replace them with Omnibus editions as it was easier and almost cheaper. So I now have a collection of 20 pl,us Omnis and about 50 Silver and Black h/c masterworks. Problem is I have some which are duplicated in the Omni's and that begged the question of whether to ditch those as well. I have finally decided not to do so for now as ultimately I would like a full set of masterworks in preference to the Omni's, it just may never happen.
For a new collector I would go softcover masterworks all the way. Reason is simply because the h/c's are gradually going out of print and not being reprinted. That will make collecting them increasingly expensive and frustrating. In fact I personally believe that it's now almost too late to build up a collection like mine without substantial resources, as so many have gone out of print or are heading that way. Certainly here in Britain, it's difficult to buy most Archives and Masterworks new and there just isn't the volume of second hand copies to buy from. Maybe the situation isn't as bad in the US but once thirty or forty of the DC archives are out of print it will be difficult to get a full set afford ably. I may just be in time to get a good masterworks collection but I have been after a Doctor Strange volume 1 for a while now and it's not easy to find at an affordable price and there are others that will soon be the same.
