My dad (him again,  I owe him so much) was a big fan as a kid of the Buster Crabbe Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers serials. He never became anymore of a Science Fiction fan than that. When he saw the ads for 2001 in the newspaper, he just made the assumption since the film was set in space with "rocket ships" that it was material similar to Flash and Buck. He thought it might be a fun movie to take the kid to see. Yeah, he had a big surprise, LOL.

As a small sidebar, my dad was also a huge fan of the Flash Gordon & Buck Rogers serials, so when he heard they'd made a Big Time honest-to-goodness motion picture about Flash Gordon he took me to the theater without even asking me (or my mom), or telling anyone where we were going!
And that's how we both ended up on the premiere of Dino De Laurentiis' FLASH GORDON, lol.
(I actually enjoyed the heck out of it, I was only 10 after all, but even I could detect my dad was not entirely satisfied by the camp approach to the material)

The movie both our dad's were really looking for came out on May 25, 1977 and starred Alec Guiness, Peter Cushing, and some young guy named Harrison Ford...
