I think it has everything to do with Paul and Jenette Kahn. I don't think any of this will change with the change in management, but I think it's all for the best that these practices are now very well established at DC.
Ironically, that arrogant, obnoxious, DICTATORIAL, totally-lacking-in-people-skills / his-own-worst-enemy guy, Jim Shooter, after alienating most of Marvel's best talent and driving them into the arms of DC, spent much of the 80's "upstairs" fighting for better deals, better conrtracts, and more creators' rights. And in the process, he totally pissed off and alienated "THE SUITS" running Marvel, until eventually, HE was kicked out the door. At which point, the entire editorial staff SIDED with management, because they wanted to keep their jobs.

Vince Colletta, meanwhile, who'd always been treated well by Shooter, wrote an open letter to Marvel in which he REALLY told them how he felt about what they'd done. It included a lot of profanity, as I recall.

Yep. Marvel has always been a "class act".  He said, sarcastically. Ever since Martin Goodman played around with the book-keeping in order to HIDE the profits on CAPTAIN AMERICA, so he wouldn't have to pay Joe Simon & Jack Kirby one red cent of the CONTRACTUALLY-AGREED ROYALTIES he owed them. No surprise they signed with DC for double the page rates and none of the editorial duties. Maybe it's a shame Simon didn't SUE Goodman back then. You know... like STAN had to, when they tried to avoid paying HIM contractually-agreed royalties from movie profits.

I really hope there's a hell.
