Now, whether you love McFarlane or hate his guts, you gotta admit, that's an accomplishment in today's industry. Spawn really endured.

It's been around for, what, 14 years? Yes, that IS an accomplishment. Albeit dampened somewhat for some by the fact that McFarlane has turned the book over to others. I'd agree it's not up to Cerberus (or even Usagi) standards as a landmark for creator controlled characters, but it is a business accomplishment worth noting.

Another such business accomplishment, to me more impressive, is the fact that Dark Horse comics, a company started in the publishing backwater of Portland, Oregon, is celebrating 20 years of operations. Dark Horse's longest running title was DHP, which went for 14 years and ended with issue 157, and I think that stat does serve to hightlight the success of Spawn.

It's pretty amazing, when you think about it, that a LOT people make their living off of comic books -- some getting quite wealthy in the process.
