I don't think it's that anyone is being "sneakier" -- just more cautious, because these terms carry weight, and can have legal value, more than just a simple acknowledgement.

And in the specific case of comics, you're often drawing characters and concepts from a larger body of work, rather than a single source (such as a novel), so I imagine that would be taken into consideration.
