Kirby was not explicity paid for co-writing, though.  He was paid only for art.  His contributions to the stories varied and fluctuated from issue-to-issue and over time, but he was paid the same page rate regardless of how much he contributed to a story.  He was not hired as a co-writer, only as an artist, regardless of what he actually contributed.
