Sure it did...Kirby was making his entire living from Marvel (albeit on a freelance basis). They were saying "Sign this or find another company to make a living from."
And you don't have to believe they meant it because if they meant it then why did Lee propose an art director post to Kirby?
What's your source for them saying sign this or leave? First time I ever heard of this. I know of the 80s contract they asked him to sign but he wasn't working for Marvel by then.
