Truly the greatest generation.

Forgive me, but my post deals with the war in the Pacific.

Just last week, I found out that a very close family friend's father fought in the Guadalcanal campaign. His father NEVER spoke of it, save for one night after a few pops there was a news report of a shark attack on TV, and he got visibly upset. Apparently as him and his fellow troops were heading back to the US, some of the men went to bathe or swim in the ocean and were eaten alive by sharks. They'd made it through being hunted in the jungle and were safely on their way home, only to be devoured by natural predators.

Shortly after that incident, my friend discovered his father's war journal, and was shocked by what he read. Sadly, when his father passed, relatives gave all the belongings (INCLUDING THE WAR DIARY!) to goodwill. Who knows where that book ended up. Hopefully someone read it and saw it's value, and it didn't go straight to the trash. The journal had mentioned a few people in the Washington State town he resided in who he served with who had committed war crimes - I figure if the book made it to the hands of someone knowledgeable, some action might have been taken against these men. So sadly, I think the book is lost forever...
