Martin Goodman had been publishing magazines for several years.

Magazines were the main part of his publishing empire, but he generally was never enthusiastic about magazines with comics in them. He pulled the plug on the Spectacular Spider-Man after two issues, and Savage Tales after one.

The big deluge of Marvel magazines didn't start until 1973, after Goodman was gone, and under Roy Thomas' leadership as Editor in Chief. The first issues of Dracula Lives, Monsters Unleashed, Tales of the Zombie and Vampire Tales hit the stands within a month or two of each other in the early part of the year (I bought them all as they came out as a kid).

Warren was a major inspiration of course, but I suspect that Skywald was also an influence. Sol Brodsky was the original editor of that company, and returned to Marvel a few months after they started publishing their magazines. An example:

As electrifying as a hair dryer thrown into a hot tub, my friend!
