I know there has been an abundance of excellent work done that were basically birthed from retcons, like Alan Moore's Swamp Thing run, but it seems like a crutch that alot of writers use to create villains with a built in motivation and connection to the protagonist; vulcan from x-men, red hood, superboy prime, etc.
