I used the present because I think DC is in that situation now. How many of those past titles could be turned into a cartoon or movie or game?
Vertigo is mostly creator-owned. Yes, they have Hellblazer. But most of their non superheroes are much lower on the radar than Marvel's non superheroes. And even Marvel's superheroes are more diverse. For instance, Warren Ellis could write Iron Man as a techno-thriller and not as a superhero story. Hulk is a monster rather than a superhero, Thor is a mythological character.
Marvel has had a measure of limited success in recent years with different genres: acclaimed runs on Iron Fist (kung fu), Hercules (mythology) space opera
DC has revived Jonah Hex and what else? I liked Warlord. They're trying to revive pulp heroes and I like that.
In other words it's been a long time since DC could claim to be diversified. They were in the past but they lost that edge and they probably lost it by shifting their other genres to Vertigo. That's what I mean when I say I feel for them. I'm aware of their glorious past and lamentnthyey haven't cultivated it
