Jack Schiff being a lousy editor isn't an arguable point. It's a fact.
The numbers i've seen say Batman sales went from 600,000 per month in the mid 50s to 265,000 when Schiff was finally booted off them. The stories sucked. It might have been proto-psychedelic but it wasn't Batman. He was supposed to have said he couldn't figure it out, he had tried changing the covers and didn't work. Gee Jack try reading the lousy stories!
Some have made the case that the sci-fi Batman was Weisenger's idea and Schiff was bullied into it. If you can't fight your corner, you can't be an editor. Can you imagine what Kanigher would have said/done if Mort had told him to put more sci-fi into Sgt Rock?
Schiff picks up the Schwartz sci-fi books and what happens? The quality drops like a rock and sales tank. Schwartz takes over Batman and the quality and sales go up. I think we can see a pattern here.
The only good thing Schiff ever did an editor is to hire Jack Kirby. And he promply fouled that up.
Jack Schiff good grammar, but bad story sense and a weakling to boot. A lousy editor.
