I've heard some people say it was a power corrupts thing. The Superman titles really got strong in the 50s, and he became the biggest silverback in the DC jungle. And soon the meanest.

Julie Schwartz liked him but didn't have to work for him.

On the other hand everbody seemed to love Jack Schiff, but he was a lousy editor.
