I don`t buy that theory and my reasoning is how come retailers sell bottles of coke and candybars today?

It's a completely different business. Candy and soft drinks are the prime driver for convenience store business; almost every single buyer is in the store because of these items (the other major driver of course being cigarettes). Few people went to convenience stores specifically for buying comics, and those that did weren't using comics as a springboard for other purchases. Even worse, the real estate demanded by comics couldn't pay for itself compared to other items (those M&Ms take up hardly any space at all). Stores sell what sells. Comics didn't, and the numbers didn't add up. It's a business.
