Ah.  But there's the rub...  The script and the comic were written side by side.  So while it may not have been "sold," it was "sold."
This is really a comic where the movie came first.

And yes, a creator owned comic that sells 75K copies at $3.50 a pop will make more for a creator than a work for hire book that sells 125K at $3.99 ea.  However, that same creator needs to create a large enough and established fan base that will follow him into indy publishing in order to get those kinds of numbers.  And the only (real) way to do that?  Work at one of the big two.  Even Alan Moore did that.
