Funny you should mention this...  I've recently 'discovered' Amazing Heroes and Comics Interview.  The latter is also comic sized -- and terrific.  It's surprising how cheap a lot of these issues are.

I've used mile high and atomic comics to identify contents.   These magazines would sell their back issues on an ongoing basis in each issue, so the other thing you can do is to buy a later issue and look for the advertisements for the back issues to see what's contained in these earlier issues.
Using the index is a good idea.  I've been using these fanzines as extras in my binds for a while.  Except for the occasional high-demand issue, they're relatively cheap (although AH tends to be more plentiful than CI).  At the Emerald City Comicon, I picked up a huge stack of them from the quarter bins which I plan to use in upcoming binds.  Plus, they're just fun reads as a look back on the 80s-90s.  Nowadays, it's kind of surprising to think that Fantagraphics was behind Amazing Heroes considering the mainstream coverage.

I wish there were another mag similar to AH or CI on the market today.  Wizard is just crap/hype.  Since their overhaul (and finally getting rid of the useless price guide), Comics Buyer's Guide has gotten much better with a nice mix of both current and older comics.
