That one panel seems to me to be an example of "Standard Marvel Formula" of that era. X-Men was a brand new book, so of course it had Professor X baring a secret, unrequited love for Jean, just like Don\Bruce\Tony\Peter\Matt did for Jane\Betty\Pepper\Betty\Karen.

I remember reading a quote from Stan about how much he preferred writing Romance comics to Superheroes... The early Marvels especially just dripped with the melodrama pushed in the contemporary romance fare.

And Stan (even 50 years ago) had a crappy memory (Bob/Bruce Banner anyone?). Maybe he forgot that he had Slim (I mean, Scott) Summers bemoaning the fact that he could never have Jean because of his terrible power, that for a moment he slipped up and had the Prof bemoan that he could never have Jean because of his terrible responsibility.

Me? I'm still bemoaning the fact that I can never have _____ because of my terrible ________!
