I like where this thread is going...Xavier to me was always the mentor/ father figure to the X-men but behind all that there are some shades of gray. He can manipulate minds after all.
In the early Stan Lee issues, there's all kinds of Xavier weirdness going on -- including angry emotional outbursts and some odd feelings for Jean Grey.  I also got a creepy feeling whenever Xavier referred to the team as "my X-Men" -- he seemed like an ego maniac to me!  I didn't develop an appreciation for the character until later in the Claremont run when he kind of took more of a back-seat philosopher's role with the team.  (Although the Patrick Stewart version of the character is probably my favorite.)
