Well Xavier was manipulating everybody, when he played dead for 2 years in the 60s. And then by hiding the events that were recalled in Deadly Genesis. And then he manipulated Wolverine into forgetting his killing mission, which is why Wolvie still hates him. And he would play ping pong with his ethics--generally manipulating people's minds and memories whenever the mood struck him, and then either regretting it later or dismissing the situation. I think he's just one of those ruined comic book characters--careless writers have messed him up--we never know quite where he stands, and that's a pity. He should have been a stronger character all along, and stood by his moral code. If he had, he'd still be at the forefront of the X-books; as it is, he'll probably never fully regain their respect not to mention their trust.
