Other comics writers from the '50s and '60s knew the correct definitions of "translucent" and "intangible", and of plenty of other big words, such as "invulnerable" and "interstellar", and would include these words in their stories in order to educate their young readers. In fact, I think I learned what "intangible" meant from a comic book.

Very true, but also very very harsh.

The SA and the GA are not comics as literature, and they were largely not being written month-in-month-out by PhD's or fancy pretentious graduate student types (a lot of modern comics feel that way to me :b ).

You've just got to adjust your expectations for storytelling, for grammar, and yes even for misuse of certain words, based on the time in which the material was printed.

Otherwise a lot of this will just not meet your standard if your standard is all based on the 1980s-today.

It really was a wildly different time.
