And, since you brought up success and failure of marriage in a modern sense, IMO, Marriage should be a completely religious ceremony. If someone wants the tax breaks, survivors rights, and all that crap, they should be made to have a civil union or something comparable. If they want to do the whole church thing afgter they've gotten the legal papers, then they can call it a marriage. But the two shouldn't be interchangeable.

That would solve the gay marriage problem, too. The religious nutjobs couldn't complain (in a perfect world) about gay marriage, since there wouldn't be any state sanctioned marriages. And if a religious figure wanted to marry off a gay couple or not, well, that's the church's decision.
