Yeah, it's just short of impossible for a printer to make an error like this. (Not completely imposible, but very, very unlikely.) Few printers would take digital files prepared for a smaller-size book and decide, on their own, to resize them for a larger-size book -- in my experience, if the files that were sent in failed to match the specs for the project, that would immediately raise red flags with a print vendor, and inquiries would be made before work went forward.

And before a book even gets that far, quotes and estimates are prepared, prices are agreed upon, projects are scheduled, there's lots of paperwork, that sort of thing. And then after the press run, a publisher will usually see press proofs -- so even if, somehow, everything went completely screwy and a book was printed at the wrong size, a publisher would most likely have the chance to catch that error and have the job re-run (assuming the print vendor was at fault).

No matter what John Byrne tells you, I doubt this was "a mistake at the printers"!
