Torgo - The big problem with Silver Age DC is that there isn't the strong sense of character or continuity that you see in Marvel.

I really couldn't tell the difference between Hal Jordan, Ray Palmer, Barry Allen, Bruce Wayne, Carter Hall, etc. They all seem basically the same. That's one of the reasons that I recommended Doom Patrol and Jonah Hex. The characters stand out and have their own personality. The Doom Patrol is pretty close to Fantastic Four except that Rita is stronger character than Sue ever was during the Stan Lee years. And the Chief is just weird and creepy and basically non-heroic, while Reed is always trying to be the hero. Jonah is similar to the Punisher or Wolverine or if you want to stretch it - Conan. One similarity to Conan is that Jonah's story up to and after his death is mapped out. Sure, there may be surprises along the way, (especially in HEX) but Jonah is Jonah. He acts a certain way and follows a certain path unique to him, unlike the normal SA DC Super-here do-gooder.

The continuity aspect is most prevalent in Legion of Super-Heroes and to a lesser extent in The Doom Patrol. The other books usually have plot-based stories with little gimmicks. I love the war titles but the early years are full of repetition and simple plot devices that you simply must accept to able to get through the books. Enemy Ace is great, but the first 6 or so stories are all basically the same. The reason I recommended Unknown Soldier is that as a bronze age title, the repetition/gimmicks are gone so the first set of stories are solid, espionage adventures, while the later half are full on 70's morality/relevance with strong characters.
