I have always detested Phil Collins, though, from the moment he thought he could take Gabriel's place in Genesis with A Trick Of The Tail. I never enjoyed a single Genesis album after Lamb Lies Down (although some -- like Duke -- were better than others -- like Invisible Touch).

When it comes to GENESIS, I think both Gabriel and Collins had their good moments and bad. It's easy for music geeks to knock Collins because he steered GENESIS in a more pop-oriented direction. I hear that all the time! However, if you listen to the Collins era albums, there really is a very good mix of the prog/art rock elements of the Gabriel era and the radio friendly pop music. Even "Invisible Touch", which was arguably their weakest album, had a very nice prog-ish piece on the second side called "Domino" and an instrumental called "The Brazilian". The final Collins album, "We Can't Dance", also had two epic 10 minute plus pieces that showcased their non-pop skills. Both Gabriel's and Collins' solo careers were also full of peaks and valleys.

As for Bono...I was never crazy about him as a vocalist, but his voice often works well within the context of his band. However, IMHO, it has been a slow but steady downhill fall since the explosive energy of their first three albums. Personally, I think Daniel Lanois was the worst thing that ever happened to their sound!
