I wouldn't be too hard on Claremont suggesting that he's condemning what came before his X-Men Forever series (or, more appropriately, after he left). (Though perhaps I missed an interview where he slammed previous X-Universe writers?) Right now, the X-Men stable is pretty competitive as far as writers go: Ed Brubaker, Mike Carey, Matt Fraction and Peter David are manning the main titles. There's just not room for Claremont, who held down Uncanny for a few recent years and had a decent, if hit and miss run. But there's still a sizable enough part of the fanbase that wants to see Claremont writing X-Comics. These out of continuity stories, like X-Men Forever and Genext allows both Marvel and Claremont to scratch that itch.

X-Men Forever is anything but a reboot. It's more a reimagining, similar in tone but bigger in scope than stuff like What If? or Just Imagine Stan Lee...
