Hrmmm, I did something similar on Facebook a few months back (only it was Top 5), let's see which ones come to mind at the moment.

image 1. John Lennon. Technically not GREAT, but the tone and texture of his voice on almost everything he does just sends shivers up n down me spine...

image 2. Rober Daltrey. Yeah, the guy's a jerk, but he could SING!!!

image 3. Mark Lindsay. Unlike pretty much all the teen idols of the mid-sixties, this guy had guts and style; check out Good Thing or Hungry or Steppin' Out.

image 4. Paul Young. Another unlikely choice since he had a rep for being just a pop star, but the guy actually made a Joy Division song sound melodic and cheerful. and his version of I"m Gonna Tear Your Playhouse Down was one of the highlights of the 80s.

image 5. Alison Moyet. I just remembered, this isn't just "Top Ten MALE Vocalists", is it?? Whether with Yaz/Yazoo or on her own, Alison's voice was a unique instrument that kept me spellbound whenever I heard it.

image 6. Feargal Sharkey. His quirkiness as lead singer with The Undertones gave us no clue what great stuff he was capable of on his first solo album, or on his one-hit wonder with The Assembly.

image 7. Ian Gillan. There simply ARE no better metal vocalists than Gillan, whether on rockers or power ballads.

image 8. Freddie Mercury. IIRC, my wife gave me a slapdown for not including him in my list on Facebook, but the FB list was Top 5, and this is Top Ten. So, now, I can include him.

image 9. Johnny Cash. A true American original. Nuff said.

image 10. Smokey Robinson. What a pure, crystal-clear voice Smokey has! Even on the MOR stuff from the late seventies and eighties that I pretty much detest, the tone of his voice excuses a lot. But when it's paired with the excellence that was Motown in the 60s, I could listen for hours on end.
