Maybe the material I remember from Action #1 was just the single page that was reprinted in black & white on the inside cover of the first (?) Superman Annual. In that case, the Feiffer book will have been the first time I read the story. It was certainly also the first time I read Whiz 2, Flash 1, All-American 16, or any Spectre appearance.
TGCBH may have also been the first time I read a Spirit story, though I remember that the character and art, and the idea of a comic book insert to Sunday funnies, seemed terribly familiar to me--it's possible that I could have seen Spirit sections as a very small child without clearly remembering them.
