Just a quick point - You may find this disturbing but as much as talk about obvious it is that Superman MOT be continued, I just went to last year's Archives Survey data to bolster a point. I was suprised that out of 143 Archives, SMOT #1 is 58th in popularity (not in the top 1/3rd) and #2 s 102nd. Given the historical pattern of dropping over the first 3 edition (sequels plateau out around 70% of original sales), SMOT #3 would not even be on the radar screen. Legion #12, addressing Karl's point, was also a bit off (but still does better than things like Adam Strange #3).
All this being said, we often speak about Archives feeding these other projects but it cuts both ways. Not everything in the Rogues or Superman in the 60's or Brightest Day has been Archived. The fact that those stories have been prepped now means that the while Archives have lowered the cost of the Chronicles, TPBs can also lower the cost of producing Archives.
I am watching with interest to see how Marvel handles this. Some of their flagship titles are sailing into waters of heavy reprints. The next Avengers Masterworks hits the already reprinted Kree-Skrull War. After that, it will shortly bump into Avengers-Defenders War. Defenders Masterworks is royally screwed, caught in the cross fire of Avengers Masterworks and the Guardians of the Galaxy Collection. Can they maintain one a month and navigate the already reprinted and the fact that in 8 more editions, their entire Silver Age super-hero content will be Masterworked?
Despite these concerns, I remain convinced that the basic product DC and Marvel is putting out is basically sound and that their is an audience for it. There is, sad to say, simply too much good product and too little money in an economy like this and we are going to have to do some waiting. Our goal, as I have said many times, is to stay engaged and keep the lights on. The product will come home to us eventually.
