There were several pages from Fantagraphics new Prince Valiant collection that had to be scanned from the printed pages of one of Rick Norwood's editions, because the material was otherwise unavailable -- and there haven't been any concerns expressed about that.

Even if DC were to go the route of using the American Nostalgia Library book as source material -- and I want to make it clear that I'm not saying this to lend any credibility to that speculation -- there's no reason for the results to be any better or any worse than Starman (which many people seem to find pleasing). Given its' age, the older book was most likely reproduced from high-end drum scans from transparencies (my guess would be 4x5s) of photographs of the printed pages, not scans from a flatbed desktop scanner. I don't recall any significant retouching work being done to the images in the older book -- if indeed there was any! -- so they should be just as good to use as source material as would be printed copies of the original comics. (The color might have shited a bit on coated stock, but that could be very easily corrected.)

(It isn't as if it the result would somehow be akin to an nth-generation VHS dub.)

In any event, I'd agree that waiting is the best bet.
