You know, this issue and the last two ones are like some great song. Tension-tension-RELEASE. In the preceding issues we get much more characterisation, suspense is being built, JJJ gloating... And then Spidey fights back and DEMOLISHES his enemies! Take that, Enforcers! Here's something for you too, Sandman! There really is something very satisfying in the Spidey's triumphant return after two issues (or so) of soul-searching.

On top of everything, Spidey even fights like a pro. He scouts the scene beforehand, doesn't leave anything to chance. Still, the Sandman is able to surprise him, because he's using his smarts too! But despite all this foresight, Spidey and Torch -- those two hot-headed teenagers -- end up in Spidey's own web! image

On personal front Peter Parker plays it cool and let's Betty Brant know he doesn't care if she's seeing someone else. And right away the strategy is working, as Betty becomes concerned about Peter's feelings.

Ditko's art is stunning throughout, the fights are fluid and dynamic, the girls are pretty. (Never let anyone tell you that Ditko couldn't draw attractive women, just look at Liz on pages 6 and 7.) And I never realised it before, but Sandman's face is always sorta lumpy, and this doesn't depend on the lighting, shadows or anything like that. I really like Ditko's inks here.

The issue ends with a mysterious villain following Peter Parker home. Does someone know he's the Spider-Man?!? Good way to build suspense.

In the Spider's Web letter col we learn what the initials M.M.M.S. stand for, and Kathy Lucas from Alabama lusts after Sub-Mariner! Yowza! I wonder how many male comic fans sent him letters after this?
