Roy Thomas knows about as much about nuclear science as he does about Red Ravens...

The exponential increase in the amount of dialogue that appeared on covers that occurred in the early 1970's was Roy Thomas' idea, as I recall.

During the bloated with dialogue period, I remember there was a letters page (I forget which comic) where someone wrote in to complain about all the stupid word balloons on the covers. They pointed out that the covers that Marvel used to feature were more effective (typically, a title caption and no dialogue in the late '60's). The letter generated an embarrassingly pissy response, I suspect written by Thomas himself, which gave a lame defense of the practice.
