Well, it obviously depends on the artist, but remember that unlike most comic books, comic strips are both written AND drawn by the same person. The deadline can be quite stressful at times, and plot-heavy strips like Johnny Hazard usually need to be fully plotted months in advance. Of course there are people who work quicker than others, just like Kirby was able to pencil nearly every title Marvel put out in the early 60s in a given month, while Steranko had deadline trouble when he got assigned to a full monthly book.
