How far do you think that they will take the Masterworks Fantastic Four |

|
What is your guess for what issue number they will take the Masterworks? Does anyone think that they will go beyond the bronze age?

I think that they will continue as long as they are selling.
My guess would be up to the beginning of the John Byrne era as I believe that we will get Omniboos of Byrne's issues in the next year or two. |

Well in theory, the series could go on for quite a while as long as sales hold up. I'd be happy to see at least another three volumes to take us up to
1975.

Could John Byrne's relationship status with Marvel make an Omnibus of his FF run less likely? I'm thinking not since there was a Byrne Hulk
Visionaries recently, but I'm wondering if someone like Quesada might want to delay a Byrne FF Omnibus just because they wouldn't want Byrne to get any
potential payday from that book.

Who really knows? Sometimes resentment and political bs truly do have a hand in too many policies and decisions. At least thats the way in most government and
corporate and even many smaller businesses I have seen or experienced.
With that cynical note, $$$ rules, so some cooler heads may prevail and get the Byrne FF out sooner rather than later. But would that stop them from eventually going ahead and masterworking that era (reprinting it again) down the road? Not if it is still selling and they don't keep such an FF/Byrne omnibus in print. Of course, economic conditions and track records will rule. They'll at least make it through later Buscema and early Buckler issues I would think...and for now, my guess is that they will continue masterworking through Byrne. |

GammaJosh wrote:Excellent question, GammaJosh. I've wondered about this before. For example, the current strained relationship between Starlin and Marvel did not stop Marvel from rushing out his Captain Marvel and Warlock issues in Masterworks form. But perhaps Marvel is not as likely to promote Starlin's work with, say, an Infinity Omnibus, than they would be if he was among their current stable of writers and artists. Does anyone have any insider perspective on this kind of thing? My guess is that it could have some influence not as a general policy, but just on a case by case basis. |

If you take the conspiracy theory hat off for a sec, it makes-o no sense-o. Now, you might see a particular series not get published for one reason or another. Witness the exclusion of DD: Ninja from the second Bendis DD Omnibus. Bendis made that happened because he happens to think that mini sucks. But that's an example where a creator has some pull about how his material is promoted and reprinted.

To answer the thread's question (howdy colonel!), I don't see any particular endpoint for FF with Masterworks. I see them rolling on just like any
line, although perhaps at a faster rate than some, being that they're a flagship title (and much of the next 50-60 issues hasn't been reprinted in
trade as of yet).

Gormuu wrote:No conspiracy hat wearing here. I may not have been real clear on my point. As I said, Marvel certainly does not seem to be freezing out Starlin's work. They got to his work in the Masterworks line quicker than expected. (And, I might add, any hard feelings Marvel might have had towards Steve Gerber did not prevent a Howard Omnibus). But I have heard of record companies that planned to release a recording artist's catalog in some newer packages as a way to push interest in them, and then scrapped those plans when the artist left the label. So I was just conceding that it was possible that Marvel might not be as inclined to put out as many versions of a writer or artist's work (a Starlin Omnibus) as they would be if they were promoting the creator's new work. |

That's exactly what I was going to say.
For the most part, the Masterworks are entering into a dead zone for F4. Issues 110 Through the beginning of Byrne's run haven't really been collected in color. So, I'd like to see all of this stuff in some color reprint format. Then, I'd like to see Marvel get to work on the run between Byrne and Simonson, and the Defalco/Ryan stuff. Then, after that's all done, even the Chris Claremont run. And most of all, I'd like to see issues 55-59 (the pre-Waid books) and the 1998 annual done as a trade. There's some good Karl Kesel and Adam Warren material in there. |

I'd love to have Walt Simonson's FF in Masterworks, but that's a loooooooong way off.

... sometimes I wish the Masterworks were made up of three series, Goldworks, Silverworks and Bronzeworks, and only the very best was produced from each era

... actually they have an Atlas Era and a Golden Age, why do they come out with a Bronze Age?
