I hate CGC...I really hate what it has done to otherwise sane people.

If they could slab houses, maybe the real estate market could go back into bubble mode.

It's an sad but all too common occurrence that whenever tragedy happens, some ghouls are out to profit from it. . . i.e. death-related memorabilia.
Michael Jackson's death is certainly no exception. (Can you believe that the top 16 albums on Amazon's music chart are ALL Jackson-related albums?)
It's bad enough that someone's trying to sell the Captain EO comic for
$160 (especially when you consider that prior to this week, it was a $5-10 comic) but someone's trying to sell an Amazing Heroes magazine with a
Captain EO ad for $25! (as if that's the ONLY
place Eclipse ever marketed it!) Sheesh!

When Ultimate Spider-Man was new, I thought it was stupid. Whatever.
So, at my LCS at the time (in Jamestown, NY) there was a copy of the white variant cover of Ultimate Spider-Man #1. It was there. I mean, it was really there, for MONTHS. One day, I decided to buy it, for cover price ($4, I think), and read it. I did so, then randomly checked its price on eBay. I believe I saw one sell for $1,000 +. Realizing I had a gem on my hands, I went back to my LCS to insult the owner of his, well, obvious stupidity. I sent the book to CGC. In my opinion, the book was a 9.0 or lower. (I'm harsh.) To my surprise and joy, the book came back 9.6. I promptly listed it on eBay. I received $750 for the book that, at the time, was reprinted at least ten times. No, Spider-Man is not dead like Michael Jackson, but sometimes he nets people a decent amount of money. Binding comics since February 2009... |

don't see why you would "rub it in" or insult him when you were the one who got a great deal. I can't see how that would endear you to your
LCS. I would thank him considering he isn't like most comic shops who wildly overprice any variant/limited edition.

media mail for comics? | ||
|
I have sent comics many times as media mail, but I'm aware that they probably do not qualify because they include advertisements.
A new wrinkle: this morning at the post office, the clerk would not allow another patron to use media mail for a school year book. When I spoke with the clerk a few minutes later, she said that media mail was only for books that you would sit down and read; with a beginning, middle, and end. (Putting aside the obvious jokes about today's comics not having that structure...) She said that some books, things such as cookbooks and photo albums -- including year books, apparently -- do not qualify. Huh? So what about magazines? What about other reference books, like an O'Reilly programming cookbook, or a dictionary, or ...? The mind boggles. So... do comics go media mail? Do magazines about comics go as media mail? What about general purpose magazines? What about comics and magazines are decades old so the ads are out of date? |

quincyjb wrote:Huh, that's something new. I've never heard of this exclusion. What about trilogies or the serialized stuff like Stephen King's Green Mile? Technically, comics aren't allowed to be shipped media mail because of the ads in them, even if they're old. It's doubtful that most offices actually open up packages and check even though they always stamp "Media mail subject to inspection." I've been sending my comics to have bound by media mail just because it's so much cheaper and I don't need the rush delivery of priority or even first-class. I figure with an address like "Library Binding," they're not going to hassle me. Heck, the post office clerk often asks me if I want the library rate (which is a tad cheaper than media)! I tell him I don't work for a library-- I'm just building one! Considering the recent financial difficulties of the Post Office and the shrinking number of people who actually send letters nowadays, I wouldn't be surprised to see the USPS gradually phase out media mail entirely or only allow it for publishers/retailers. |

Comics probably should not be in media mail. Graphic Novels can because there are no paid advertisements, and they have the beginning, middle and end LOL.

This is also the first time that I have heard of the particular exclusion that you mention, quincyjb.
There was also a recent discussion about media mail over in the "Bound volumes on ebay" thread. |

He offered to buy it back for something like $15. Honestly, I don't know how this store is still in business. He operates in Jamestown, NY. Not a good income area by any stretch of anybody's imagination. But, he was trying to sell super expensive toys to a group of people who didn't want them. He also insulted Manga in my presence and said he didn't understand how people would buy it and that he wouldn't stock it. I went back after like 5 years of not going (because I live in Buffalo, NY now). He remembered me. He always will remember me because of the Ultimate Spider-Man comic he sold me. He actually said to me that his business is doing better now that he's not trying to sell products to people who don't want them. I think, after something like ten years in business, he found his niche, which I am happy about. And, I didn't pay him market price for it for a number of reasons. One is that the comic was on his shelf for MONTHS. Nobody was buying it. The other is that I didn't know the "real" price of the book until I purchased it. I mean, at that point I knew I had a deal, I didn't want to ruin it by retroactively paying more money that the store charged. If the owner kept on top of things better, he would have sold the book for more money -I paid his asking price. Binding comics since February 2009... |

I just thought it was odd that in the same sentence the guy said that people want to buy manga, but since he hates it so much he won't stock it. This all had to do with him fighting in the Vietnam War and how, since he was in the army he resented Japan for what they did during WWII (he told me this). I just think that if you run a business, you should offer products that sell. Binding comics since February 2009... |
