davidbstewart, that Gil Kane Superman volume is an excellent idea. I'm printing that guide out for someday when I get extra $ to have it bound!

The box below shows all of the comics on my 2006 schedule. The two bundles to the right are next in line.

I did a lot of picking through boxes at a recent con and scored a lot of different books I'd like to get bound. However, I don't have complete runs as of yet. I'm very close on many of these, but betwen missing a few issues and still being unsure about mapping volumes out, I'm still moving slowly.

Re: Binding Schedule for 2006

This week I mailed out my favorite CAPTAIN AMERICA run to David for binding (David, you are the man!). The five volumes break down as follows:
Vol. 1 308-322, Ann 8 Vol. 2 323-339 Vol. 3 340-353 Vol. 4 354-370 Vol. 5 371-386 After this project is completed I have AVENGERS #298-324, AWC #42-69, FLASH #0, 60-100 (plus a few x-over issues with GL) on deck. As for how many volumes for these projects, well, I'm still deciding how to proceed. The one project that I really want to go forward with is binding ATOM #11-38. The problem however is that many of the covers would be impacted by the binding process; art and/or word balloons would be cut out, so I am hesitant to have said issues bound. |

Re: Binding Schedule for 2006

Any particular reason you're starting your Cap volumes with #308 & your Avengers volumes #298? I know they're both crossover tie-ins (Secret Wars II for Cap and Inferno for the Avengers).
My runs on the titles begin with these exact issues! So I'm asking mainly with one eye towards eventually binding them myself. |

Re: Binding Schedule for 2006
Quote: The Cap issues are all written by Mark Gruenwald, my favorite Cap writer, and I consider said issues the best part of his run. I chose to start with #308 instead of #307 (Gru's first issue) because #307 really was a Nomad solo story; whereas, #308 is a full Cap story and a good intro to the character. My actual first issue of the AVENGERS was #299 (it eventually prompted me to collect a complete story run of AVENGERS volume 1), but starting the volume(s) with #298 made more sense since it was the start of the rebuilding of the Avengers story arc. |

Thanks, Schatzie. I'm with you on Gruenwald. You're right that #308 is a good intro issue. I may start binding there too. Though, I've been meaning to pick up the Captain Britain issues that come closely before #308. We'll see ...

Ah! The completist in my is cringing at all of your random starting points. Don't you eventually (once you get rich and famous) want the prior issues to be bound? Wouldn't a nice even # (like #300), or a nice even year (like the January issue) be a better place to start? I know it's not my collection, but "Ah!"

Re: Starting collections

My collections are mainly like Schatzie's. I bind by creator run rather than series, for the most part. I view these custom hardcovers more like complete stories, rather than archival collections. Sometimes, like Untold Tales of Spider-Man or HERO, that means binding the whole thing. Sometimes, like with my Capt. America book, that means collecting random issues which make up one longer storyline. My Cap. book has a few random appearances of the Super Patriot and then the run of issues where he replaced Cap. leading up to #350. My Supreme books are the Alan Moore issues, my Doom Patrol books are the Grant Morrison issues, and my Swamp Thing books are the Mark Millar issues.

================================= We bind some runs of comics over and over, Alpha Flight for example. No one does it the exact same way or with the exact same issues. Next Men is another example. Do we we flip the back up story or not? Do we move them to the back? Do we do a cover gallery? Do we the covers where they are at, etc., etc. dpbanks |

Quote: I'm thinking through the various options as far as what issue to start binding with. I like the idea of starting Cap around #308. Maybe #300 would be just as good, I'll have to pick up the issues and see how well the storylines break-up. My problem with starting by a cover date is if it's in the middle of a storyline. I may or may not like to get the previous 200-some issues of Cap bound. I don't plan on being rich and famous (at least not famous |

...I have been busy Xmas shopping and all so I did not see your comments and query till last night...
Your Kane/DC Superman list looks right to me, though I would probably add DC Challenge 4: ...Supergirl 6: ...Best Of DC Digest 31 and 44: ...and Adventure Comics 496 and 497: Thanks for the nice words on my Kane Marvel Covers site--I just wish I had more time to put into it--we all really need a good Gil Kane site! |

Ooooh.... Thanks, Justin. I knew about the digests, but could decide whether to include, but I didn't know about the DC Challenge or Supergirl issues!
I've found that this period of Kane's career seems underappreciated (and I'm being diplomatic with that word), but I can't get enough of it. Really liked his inking style during this period. Best Regards,

I need to replace a few issues, but my next books (not necessarily in this order) will probably be:
The Maxx book 2 (21-35 with Friends of Maxx 1-3) Peter Milligan's shorter Vertigo works, probably in two volumes. I'm leaving out Rogan Gosh and Tank Girl, but including Skreemer. I'm not sure about his Animal Man run. There was Scarecrow one-shot I've not read yet, but if it's any good, I'll probably put it in, Vertigo or not. Human Target in two volumes, and Shade 1-50 in three, maybe with the last twenty in a fourth. More Milligan: I might do a Strange Days book, with some Freakwave shorts, Strange Days 1-3, Paradax, Johnny Nemo 1-3 (do 4-6 exist?) and the Deadline stories. I'm not sure yet. Tales Of The Beanworld: This might be a problem, as the first issue is slightly wider and slightly shorter than all the rest. I'm fairly certain there's enough room on the sides to trim all the issues to the same height, but I'll have to talk to David about it when I'm ready. (My copy of issue ten has disappeared, and I should probably track down the Asylum color story. ) Jacques Tardi in English: the US-comic-sized black and white versions from Cheval Noir. There's (at least) one more in NBM's ComicsLit Magazine (which should be fairly impossible to find), and a bit in early Heavy Metal, but it's probably not enough to fill out a second, magazine-sized book. What I'd like to get, but I don't have the comics: The individual issues of The Invisibles. I'd like a clean three volumes, but I also like to keep my books about or under twenty issues. I'll cross that bridge when I come to it. Grant Morrison's Zenith, from the 2000AD issues (this should be slightly easier than tracking down the TPBs. I hope.) Alan Moore's Supreme run That all should take me through the next year, at least. [As to why all the Milligan, in case you were wondering: He's the least in-print of any of the creators I'm into. With guys like Moore and Morrison, everythings pretty much either a) in-print, b) not worth getting, or c) difficult to find/prohibitively expensive (e.g. Miracleman, Zenith). (And I already have Doom Patrol and Flex bound) That's all. It'll be kind of weird to have a such disproportionate amount of one writer, though.] |

I'm having them bound between real gold covers with the title spelt out using diamonds, so there, beat that.

Well... I've nothing planned yet.
Not until I get my Test volume, Justice Society of America, back from the binders and decide how I like it. But, assuming I'm happy with the whole binding thing, my next stuff should be HERO Monolith Hitman Hourman Thunderbolts 1-75, and the Avengers/T-Bolts mini-series |
